( CHARACTER ★ INFORMATION )

DOES THIS CHARACTER MEET SKELETAL BASICS? yep!
NAME & AGE: ( Queen ) Elsa ( of Arendelle )
CANON & CANON POINT: Frozen, post-film.
CANON INFORMATION: wiki wiki.

PERSONALITY:
❝ conceal, don't feel. put on a show.
make one wrong move and everyone will know. ❞

Growing up, Elsa was taught to remember two very important things - one, that she is the heir to the throne of Arendelle, and will one day be crowned queen, and two, that under no circumstances can anyone know that she possess the power to create and control ice and snow. Yeah. No pressure, right? But no, honestly, Elsa, being the older sibling, learned very quickly how to be mature, polite, and -well, queenly. So if she was feeling pressured, she was very good at hiding it.

But there's also a side to her ( a side that her younger sister Anna has only ever seen ) that's playful and silly, one that was unfortunately shut away after an accident occurred with her power. When they were very little, Elsa and Anna were playing in the grand ballroom in the middle of the night, Anna egging Elsa on to create snow for them to play in. Which was normal for them! Anna was so enthusiastic about Elsa's powers, and Elsa could never really bring herself to say no to her younger sister. But while they were playing, Elsa accidentally struck Anna with a burst of her power, and after they brought little Anna to a troll who possessed a magic that could cure her, he also removed all the memories of Elsa's magic, and told her that to keep her little sister safe, Elsa needed to hide away her powers, and learn to control them. Which... turned into a whole thing, but most importantly, her father literally isolated Elsa from the rest of the kingdom, going so far as to reduce the staff, and permanently shut the gates so that nobody could get in. He taught Elsa that the key to controlling her powers was to conceal them, "don't feel", even giving her gloves in order to try and literally conceal her powers, and that was how she ( and her sister, which was the important part ) could keep everyone safe.

So, that's- a huge part of the type of person Elsa grew up to be.

She's not standoffish, but she's definitely shy in a way that goes way beyond a queen just trying to seem polite and poised. Elsa kept herself locked in her room even after her parents died, keeping herself away from anyone that might get hurt from her powers. Little did she know, by holding onto that fear of hurting someone and never letting anyone get close to her, she was only making her lack of control over her powers even worse. They respond to her emotions, and she was almost constantly in a state of worry, if not outright fear over what she could do.

When she turned twenty-one, they had to open the gates for one day, allowing the members of her kingdom to attend the celebration of her coronation. During this time she was completely out of her mind with worry, which again, only made her powers even harder to control. She made it through nearly the entire night, but after an argument with her sister after she tried to ask for Elsa's blessing to marry a man she met just that night ( which is where we get a glimpse of her Big Sister Mode, which made her explain that no, she wouldn't give her her blessing, because the idea was ridiculous ) , she accidentally formed a barrier of ice between herself and the rest of the party ( yes, the entire ballroom witnessed her mistake ), and instead of staying to try and explain, she ran. She's just so, so scared of what she can do, and what people will think of her, that her gut instinct was to run away before she made things worse. That it would be better to hide and shut herself away than to pose as a threat to anyone else.

❝ no right, no wrong, no rules for me
i'm free ❞

On the flip side! Once she lets go of that fear and thinks of her powers as a blessing instead of a curse, we see her more adventurous and confident side. After she's run off to hide in the snowy mountains ( after accidentally freezing over the entire kingdom, woops ), she feels free for the first time, and it shows in her ability to control her powers. Without the pressure of being queen, and more importantly ( to her ), knowing she won't be able to hurt anyone out in the middle of nowhere, she's able to create beautiful things with her powers, and for the first time we see her looking truly happy. During her song "Let It Go", she also makes it clear that she's aware of the ridiculously high standards she holds herself to, because of what she thinks her father would want her to be, if he were still there. The song also shows her rebellious, sassy side, which is fun. She's got it in her to be a really strong, confident girl, but duty and responsibility have kept her from really tapping into that. But she acknowledges that she tried hard to live by her father's "rules" to help her control her powers, but they ultimately failed, and she has to find her own way to live with this power she has very little control of.

Of course, her first instinct was to just live all alone in a giant ice castle, because being alone and free was better than feeling trapped and constantly worrying about hurting people with her power, but. By the end of the movie it's made clear that she needs her sister, friendships, and love, in order to truly be "free" with her powers.

On this same note, during the party, before she and Anna got into their argument, we see some really sweet moments between them, that all start when Elsa just says "hi" to her, and Anna seems genuinely shocked by it. It shows us that yeah, Elsa really did keep herself locked away that whole time, completely cut off from her sister, but it also showed that she was actually really glad to get the chance to spend time with her little sister, too. They share a silly moment, bonding over chocolate and giggling over the ridiculous dancing antics of a particular guest of theirs. Her love for her sister is so apparent, although in a lot of ways she still associates "letting herself have fun" with "letting her powers get out of control", after what happened to them as kids. When Anna says that she wishes every day were like the day of the coronation, Elsa responds with "Me too. But it can't." and when Anna tries to ask why, she turns away and simply insists "Because it can't!" and that- pretty much says it all. She would rather have her sister think that she's just being a stick in the mud than tell her about what happened to them as kids, remind her of the memories that the troll took away. She truly thinks it's safer to Anna to just not know, even if the opposite ultimately ends up being true. Woops. Just because Elsa's the newly appointed queen doesn't mean she always knows what she's doing.

❝ are you ready?! ❞

Overall, Elsa isn't afraid to be the mature, rule-abiding sibling out of the two sisters ( especially if it means Anna gets to be the happy, playful one. she would do anything to make sure her sister is happy ), but she's finally starting to learn how to loosen up, without the fear of her powers getting the best of her. That's where she's at now, after the events of the film. She's still learning how to let go of her fear and worry over what could happen, how to trust herself and her control over her abilities, and how to balance out her responsibilities as queen without forfeiting her desire to play and have fun when she gets the chance. All she really, really wants is to do right by her kingdom, and most importantly, her sister. Without hiding who she is, and what she can do. She's finally learned to love her power ( literally, love is the secret to controlling it, so. there's that. ), and it's made her a much, much happier person, overall.

COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING: Seelie!
While Elsa goes through a lot of changes throughout the movie, the one thing that remains steadfast about her is her desire to protect her sister, and do what she thinks is best for the kingdom. She causes a little mayhem in the process ( freezing over the entire kingdom in her attempt to escape and isolate herself after her powers are revealed, woops ), but overall her intentions are always good, and always with the intent of keeping order in the kingdom. I think she's still trying to figure out how to break out of her "using your powers will only get people hurt" headspace, but for now that actually keeps her in check, and keeps her from using it too freely, like an Unseelie might. Whenever she uses her powers for something ..not friendly, in the movie, she's always acting out of fear more than anything else. Fear of herself, her powers, fear of hurting someone, and then once specifically, fear of being brought back to the kingdom when Hans shows up at her castle. It's not because she doesn't want to take responsibility for what she ( accidentally ) did, it's because she's afraid she'll only make things worse. So mostly, her biggest sin is being a drama queen. But she's working on it! The way she treats her powers as a responsibility, even after singing Let it Go when she could have easily turned a little selfish and dark with it, is why I think she's more Seelie than anything else. Plus, she's a queen now. She's all about rules, and order, and doing what's best for the population at large, not just herself.

ABILITIES:
the ice queen
❝ listen to me. your power will only grow.
there is beauty in it. but also great danger.
you must learn to control it.
fear will be your enemy. ❞

at the core of her powers, Elsa can manipulate ice and snow. her abilities span from being able to freeze the floor with a stomp of her foot, to building an entire ice palace. yeah. shit's crazy. she can also bring inanimate things, made of snow, to life. the main problem with her power, the part that she ultimately has to learn to control, is that it manifests itself through her emotions.

+ so, on the one hand, if she's feeling safe and happy, or excited to use her powers, she can create a giant castle and gorgeous chandeliers made of perfectly symmetrical ice fractals. while she was singing Let it Go, she used her powers to build the same snowman she used to build for her sister, using her powers. only because she was in such a great mood, she actually brought him to life. and he's super friendly, and cheerful, and optimistic.

- however, when she's scared, whatever she creates will have sharp, jagged edges, and if she brings anything to life while she's upset, well. you get marshmallow. he was the result of her fear after she learned she froze over the entire city, and he serves as a giant, angry snow bouncer for her castle, after that.

- another seriously scary flaw to her power is that if she hits you with a blast of her power, not the snow or ice that forms from it, but a shock of power, it can be fatal.
-- if hit in the head, the spell can be removed easily enough, by someone else who has magic ( we're never told if she can remove the "ice" from someone's head, but I think she probably could, if she had to. hopefully she never will ), but while they still have the "ice" there in their head, the person will feel freezing cold, and a strand of their hair will turn white as snow. we're never shown in canon what happens after prolonged exposure, but I think it's similar to what happens when a person is hit in the chest, but maybe slower.
-- worse yet, if a person is hit in the chest with a blast of power, it's said that it forms ice around the person's heart, and it's not as easily removed as a shot to the mind, because the only thing that can "cure" it is an act of true love. it starts the same as getting hit in the head, only you turn colder, faster, and eventually your hair turns all white. after that, it's only a matter of time before you literally freeze over. like, straight up ice sculpture.
INVENTORY:
- just this dress! which is made of... ice...
- she's technically wearing this dress underneath.
and she just froze the ice dress... over it... I dunno her powers are weird.

- BOON GIFTS
- her fox kit, Siku!
"... totally unaffected by the worst of her ice magic. The fairies which bring it explain that imps had killed its mother and littermates, leaving it an easy target for other predators in the wild. The more she allows it to accompany her outside of her quarters, the easier control over her own powers will come.

It will be quite mischievous, however, and being easily able to identify her friends, may sometimes bring into her room small trinkets of theirs or items of their clothing."

- two tin soldiers
"She shall be given two small tin soldiers which will grow to life-size and defend her when necessary when she sets them upon the ground and says, 'téigh i ngleic le'."
